Our curriculum is designed to get you communicating confidently in ASL from the start. We focus first on facial expressions and non-manual markers, which are essential to ASL grammar- such as how eyebrow movements change the meaning of a question.

You’ll also explore key ASL and Deaf culture topics, including:

  • Common myths about deafness and the Deaf community
  • Proper use of pronouns
  • Introductory dialogues in ASL
  • Expressing emotions as an important parameter of ASL
  • Noun-verb pairs, negatives, classifiers, and directional signs

  • English-ASL translation and more

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Hold a basic conversation in ASL
  • Understand foundational aspects of Deaf culture

Note: This is an introductory, non-credit course and is not equivalent to a full college (64+ hours) or high school (150+ hours) ASL class.
